Paper Smooches - Welcome Autumn

This week's Paper Smooches SPARKS challenge is Anything Goes, so I took that as an opportunity to make a fun autumn card. I've been meaning to use the fun Paper Smooches Autumn Groves stamp set for ages now, but I kept getting distracted. With this card, I'm also trying out a new coloring medium - colored pencils.

I started by cutting a piece of white cardstock to measure 3 3/4 by 5 1/4". I used chocolate brown ink to stamp the scarecrow, pumpkin, two apples and the leaves, along with stitched trails. I then used my new Prismacolor pencils to color in the image. I only got a small set of pencils, so I used a combination of colors to add depth to the image. I tried not to blend the colors in completely, leaving a bit of pencil texture.

After everything was colored in, I masked off the images and grabbed a paintbrush and a couple of distress markers. Using Vintage Photo and Spiced Marmalade, I created a bunch of splatter dots on the right side of the card. Once the splatter was dry, I stamped the Welcome Autumn sentiment from Autumn Groves in brown ink.

For embellishments, I turned to my Pretty Pink Posh stash. I started by tying some brown ruffle ribbon around the top of the panel. I love this ribbon, and I've been coveting it since I got it, but I think it fits perfectly with the card. I used a simple knot and trimmed the ends.

Then I added some sequins! I used Pretty Pink Posh's Tangerine (in 6mm), Marigold (in 6mm) and Mossy Green (in 4mm) along with Ranger Studio Multi-Matte glue.

I found some fun plaid paper in Webster's Pages Happy Camper paper pad. I used Mama Elephant's Femme Frames to cut a scalloped panel out. For the card base, I cut a sheet of brick red cardstock in half, and scored it for a standard A2 card. I adhered the patterned paper at the bottom, then adhered the main panel.

  1. Love the vibrant colours you've used in this - it's so happy and so 'fall' at the same time! That little splash of pink is completely unexpected, but it really zips, and your splatter dots are wonderful!

    1. Thanks so much, Kerilyn! I really appreciate your sweet comment.

I'm super happy with the colors, too. I think I really lucked out in the prismacolor department because the few pencils I have are in the perfectly bright and vibrant tones- exactly the kind I'm drawn to. I'll have to experiment with some richer tones eventually, too. It'll be fun to see how different of a feel I can get with a darker palette. :D

    1. You are too kind, Kylie! I feel like I have no clue as to what I'm doing with the colored pencils. Thankfully, these Prismacolors are really soft, so you can blend them around a bit like Copics.

And I do love this set! It's completely adorable, while at the same time with lots of elements to make it more classic. I ought to do something with the tree trunks soon, too. :D

  3. Hey Lunarea!! Your card is so pretty. The colors are amazing. I'm not an autumn fan but I surly welcome it because of your card. (I don't want to see the summer go). Beautiful done. Love it.

    1. Thank you so very much! I really wanted to do a happy sort of fall, and it was incredibly fun to color with brighter shades.

Autumn's my very favorite season - especially when it's early and the temperature's cooled. We've got a lot of trees around the area that turn golden and red, so it's absolutely gorgeous to see. And there's no pollen like when spring rolls around. :D

  4. So sweet! Your coloring with the pencils is fabulous and I love the inky splatters. I rarely do that on my cards because I'm so worried I'll mess them up by getting them too splattered! Thanks for joining us at Paper Smooches SPARKS!

    1. Thanks so much, Lori!

I totally get what you mean! It's a bit nerve-wracking to do the splatters, but they do produce such a great effect. I try to cheat a bit by starting out with more subtle or diluted color for the first pass, then get a little more bold with the second pass. Thankfully, it worked out pretty nice this time around. :D
